Update from Yellow Mountain Imports

The super-Yunzi tested negative for lead.

This morning, I received the update below from YMI on their own tests for surface-accessible lead content in their Yunzi. I really admire their efforts to look after their customers and keep the communication lines open.

The following stones have been tested and do have lead:
  • Double Convex, New Yunzi, size 32 9.2mm
  • Old Yunzi, all sizes

The following stones have tested negative to lead content:
  • Single Convex, New Yunzi, all sizes
  • Double Convex, New Yunzi, size 38 and 42, 10.7mm and 11.9mm

In addition our marble stones, ceramic stones, melamine stones, and anti-bacterial stones are negative for lead. I will have results for the Jade Luster Yunzi tomorrow.

Thanks for bearing with us! We trying our best to resolve the situation to the satisfaction of all our fellow Go players.

No problem and he mea iki.

This is a difficult time for YMI and, to the best of my knowledge, they're the only Yunzi vendor that's being notably proactive in dealing with this situation.

Hmmm, while inquiring about the jade yunzis I got a different story from YMI.

"Not to worry the stones are lead free."

Not sure if I should test them myself or what at this point.

Since I don't know when your correspondence with YMI took place, I can't determine whether it was a timing issue or a miscommunication. If you feel that the risk is a concern for your household, it would not be a bad idea to pick-up an inexpensive test kit at your local hardware store.

Chiyo,

Thanks for the heads up on this issue. I contacted YMI and after a little e-mail exchange was quickly offered either a marble stone replacement now or a Yunzi replacement later. I opted for the latter, so now it's simply a waiting game.

Also, looking at the correspondence here, are you in Hawaii? I might be headed for UH-Manoa come summer and will need some Go to get acclimated, I think.

Chiyo, thanks for the info. I just got a set of new yunzi from YMI last week. After seeing all the reports, I e-mailed them and got a response back that all the yunzis had lead and the offer of an exchange for marble. I REALLY like my yunzi stones but have three children so I'm a little concerned. I'm somewhat confused but very much impressed with YMI's commitment to their customers.

Thanks for the info. Do you know if go-gamestore.com's single convex yunzi stones are lead positive? if so then thanks in advance

Not sure about the single convex stones at go-gamestore.com but their bi-convex yunzi stones definitely contain lead, I just tested mine (purchased a few years ago) and they tested positive for lead. I have tried contacting them to see if they have any kind of exchange offer in place but haven't heard anything. Anyone else had any luck getting a response from go-gamestore.com about the lead in their yunzi stones?
